With less than two weeks until Remembrance Day, the Royal Canadian Legion in Fort St. John kicked off its annual Poppy Campaign this week with a proclamation at City Council on Monday. In addition to the Poppy Campaign, the Legion is also celebrating Legion Month and Cadet Month in November.
Both the Legion and the Cadets have been fixtures in the community for decades, and the Poppy Month campaign helps to raise money for veterans and their families in the region. Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps training officer, Tracy Radcliffe attended Monday’s council meeting and spoke of the Legion’s service to the community.
“Even though we’re not having a great year this year, we still managed to give $40,000 out to the community,” she said.
One thing that the Legion always does is support the Cadet program, she added.
The 2276 Royal Canadian Army Cadets saw some changes this year, with changes in command following the tragic death of commanding officer Captain Kirk Titley in March. Major Dan Davies filled the position until a new, permanent CO was found.

On October 23, Major Davies handed over command of the unit, following an inspection, to Lieutenant Nikita Wells. Commander Paula McHale from Cadet headquarters in Victoria presided over the ceremony at the Legion.
Major Davies will be mentoring in the program and filling in as needed.
