For decades, Casey’s Neighbourhood Pub has been a fixture in Fort St. John, serving iconic food such as the Mile High Nachos and Prime Rib on Sundays to countless local patrons. It’s unique atmosphere, which for many years included an electric train running around the pub’s ceiling, created a great place for friends, family and co-workers to gather.
That atmosphere, that ambiance disappeared in early-morning in a blaze on Sunday.
The fire department arrived on scene at Casey’s at approximately 4:40 a.m. on December 8 to find the building fully engulfed.
The fire whose cause is still to be determined, is believed to have begun in the building’s basement and quickly spread throughout the structure, according to the Fort St. John Fire Department and the City of Fort St. John.
Because of the intensity and extent of the fire, the 16 firefighters who responded were not able to enter the building, and instead used the aerial apparatus as well as handlines to extinguish the blaze.
By 6:30 a.m., the fire was under control, and crews spent another six hours on scene making sure the fire was fully extinguished and suppressing any hotspots.
On Sunday afternoon, a GoFundMe fundraiser was started by Casey’s bartender Susanna Hall to help the staff who are now out of work, right before Christmas.
“On behalf of the staff of Casey’s Pub, we want to acknowledge the profound loss felt by our community and extend our deepest gratitude for your patronage, support, and shared memories over the years.
“This loss is especially heartbreaking for Dimitri, our boss, who, since taking over the business several years ago, poured his heart and soul into preserving Casey’s legacy and ensuring it remained a cherished part of our community. His dedication and hard work helped make Casey’s the special place it was. Casey’s was not just our workplace; it was our second home, and we will miss all of you greatly,” she said in the GoFundMe description.
Donations to the GoFundMe will provide much-needed relief, Hall said, as staff negotiate the days ahead and the holiday season.
“Together, we can honor the legacy of Casey’s Pub and support those who have been its heart and soul. Every contribution, no matter the size, will make a meaningful difference.”
The goal of the fundraiser is $5,000 and as of Monday morning, $877 has been raised.
