The Fort St. John Literacy Society is once again celebrating Family Literacy Week, from January 26 to February 2 in the North Peace. Family Literacy Day is Monday, January 27.
The Society is dedicated to delivering diverse community programming that promotes literacy and provides learning opportunities in a supportive setting.
“Family literacy is the way parents, children and extended family members use literacy at home and in the community. It occurs naturally during the routines of daily life and helps children and adults get things done.”

“We’re really excited to be once again offering Family Literacy Week,” said Azaria Richards, FSJ Literacy Society Program Coordinator.
“We’re really looking to get families involved in the community, because that triggers learning and connection, which is a great thing.”
Parental education has a big positive impact on whether their children will attend a post-secondary institution.
“So, if we can provide that, through our community, that can have ripple effects throughout our community,” said Richards. “More literate children grow into more literate adults which can contribute to our community in a great way.”
The Society’s goals for Family Literacy Week are to create awareness, share family literacy activities and resources, and encourage families to participate in events, activities and contests.

Richards is excited to celebrate this year’s theme with the help of title sponsor Beem Credit Union. The theme is Learn to be Green, Together! which encourages families to embrace eco-friendly habits while strengthening connections and learning together.

There are variety of fun literacy-related family events leading up to and during Family Literacy Week, including Family Board Games at the North Peace Cultural Centre, the Great Big Buddy Read in partnership with SD60, Story and Craft Time at the FSJ Public Library, and a special event, self-guided cave tours, on the January 31 Non-Instructional Day at the Tse’Kwa Heritage Society (Charlie Lake Caves) site.
