In case you didn’t have time to spare and missed this week’s articles, here is a summary of what The Broken Typewriter reported on this week, with links to the full articles.

CDC Month:

We kicked off the month with Fort St. John City Council declaring February to be CDC Month, following an informative presentation from three representatives of the Child Development Centre. This year is also the CDC’s 52nd Annual Talent Show, which will be held at the North Peace Cultural Centre on March 7.

FSJACL celebrates 65 years:

The Fort St. John Association for Community Living is also celebrating many years in the community with their 65th Anniversary which fell on January 23. Our article detailed the history of the Association and its commitment to supporting individuals with developmental disabilities and complex needs achieve full and meaningful lives in the community.

FSJACL has tremendous plans for the future, including expanding their main location into a 6,000 square foot community centre. The first stage of this plan was completed when the Association established new offices at the corner of 100 Street and 104 Avenue.

FSJACL is also partnering with the city to build a downtown housing project on the remaining parcel of land where the hospital once stood. This project will focus on inclusive and accessible workforce housing and include subsidized units for individuals with disabilities.

Energy Minister comes to town:

BC’s new Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions came to town last week and had what Mayor Lilia Hansen described as a fulsome discussion with council.

They touched on topics ranging from the Environmental Assessment process for windfarms to streamlining the permits process to bring certainty back to the industries and businesses in the North.

Of the meeting, Hansen said: “If nothing else, it helps just to keep putting these concerns forth, and I believe the more times someone hears something and from various sources, I’m hoping that will hit back to the core of the responsible management of our resources.”

Smart Money column:

Fort St. John CFP Brad Brain was back again on Thursday this week with the second installment of his weekly column, Smart Money, where he shares his thoughts about various aspects of the investment world.

This week he discussed the difference between a good asset and a good investment, particularly in relation to stocks.

His first column, published in The Broken Typewriter on January 30 talked about the looming Trump tariffs and the impact it would have on investments.

Sheriffs are coming:

The latest class of new sheriff-recruits graduated this week from the BC Sheriff Service’s training program, and the 24 grads will be dispersed to courthouses throughout the province, including Fort St. John.

According to the RCMP, there has been a chronic shortage of sheriffs – about half of the number needed – in the city, leaving the police to fill in the gaps and take them away from their regular crime-fighting duties.

It is hoped that the arrival of an additional sheriff on March 7 will relieve some of this burden.

Looking ahead to next week – the City of Fort St. John and District of Taylor are each holding council meetings on Monday. The agendas are up on their websites.

Family Day Weekend, which begins on Valentine’s Day February 14 coincides with the city’s annual High On Ice Festival. From ice slides to professional carving to events for kids and horse-drawn sleigh rides, there’s something for everyone this weekend. Unlike last year, the weather promises to be much more wintry!

Stay tuned for coverage from The Broken Typewriter of events and news around the North Peace in the coming week!
