In case you missed them, here’s a summary of what The Broken Typewriter reported on this week, with links to the full articles.

Taylor Council seeks First Nations feedback:

In the most popular article of the week, Taylor Council received a report on the progress of their land acknowledgement which the land acknowledgement committee has been working hard on for the past year. A draft acknowledgement was sent out to all the Nations in the region, but only Doig River First Nation replied.

Council quite liked Doig’s suggestion of adding a reference to the Dune-Zaa in the acknowledgement, but would still like to hear the thoughts of other local First Nations.

Area B by-election campaign kicks off:

Two farmers from Cecil Lake are vying for the position of Area B Director on the Peace River Regional District’s board of directors. Both have experience in local government, with Madeleine Lehmann serving on School District 60’s Board of Trustees for the past six years; and Reid Graham currently serving as Alternate Director for Area B.

The position became vacant when previous director Jordan Kealy won a place in the BC Legislature as the MLA for Peace River North.

The by-election is scheduled for February 22.

FSJ looks to balance budget, raise revenues:

The second most popular story of the week is actually a hold-over from the January 27 City Council meeting, where council received a presentation on the draft 2025 Operating and Capital Budget from the Director of Finance.

Currently the operating budget isn’t balanced and council was presented with a number of options to increase revenues. The option council liked the best was one that had the least impact on tax-payers, but looked for ways to save money and reduce expenditures.

Too Little, Too Late:

One of my rare editorials proved very popular this week – I discussed my thoughts about the province’s newfound devotion to the natural resource industries, and how, in my opinion, Eby and co., are simply spewing hot air, and even that is too little, too late.

SMART MONEY column:

Brad was back again, with his third column for The Broken Typewriter, entitled – I don’t want to invest my money because . . . – in which he discussed whether there is a good or bad time for investing, and that even though things change, there’s some things that always stay the same in the financial world.

Celebrating 60 years of the Maple Leaf flag:

In honour of Flag Day, a brief history of how our beloved national symbol came to be. Did you know that the designer of Canada’s flag was from Edmonton? Or that Lester B Pearson himself submitted the design that came in second?

Check out the article for more fascinating Flag Day facts.

Looking ahead to next week, School District 60 is having its monthly board meeting on Tuesday evening, and the Peace River Regional District Board meets on Thursday morning. The agendas for both are up on their websites, just follow the links above.

Of course, the Area B by-election takes place on Saturday, and the Crystal Cup Pond Hockey Tournament is also scheduled for this coming weekend at Charlie Lake.

Stay tuned for more coverage from The Broken Typewriter of events and news around the North Peace in the coming week!
