In case you missed them, here’s a round-up of the stories published in The Broken Typewriter this past week.
I took a day off for Family Day, which was cool because it coincided with our daughter’s Reading Week break from school – with the cold, it turned out to be a good day to stay inside and bake banana bread!
The top story of the week was Stage North’s production of Mamma Mia, which opened at the North Peace Cultural Centre on Friday evening. The Broken Typewriter was fortunate to be able to take some photos at one of the rehearsals, and if you haven’t seen the show yet, you should, it’s fantastic!
Speaking of photos, we kicked off the week with a look back at some of the High on Ice Festivals of years gone by, as the annual event celebrated its 20th Anniversary this year. There are always such incredible sculptures, and the ice slides have definitely undergone a big change since they were first introduced in 2008.
Hot on the heels of that wonderful community event, the Treaty 8 Tribal Association’s office building on 100th Avenue was the target of racist graffiti, which has been condemned throughout the community – police are treating it as a hate crime and are investigating.
Then as the provincial government returned to the Legislature this week, Diversification and certainty remain key to creating a successful economy, according to industry leaders at the recent BC Natural Resources Forum.
Brad Brain discussed the Keys to Financial Success in his weekly Smart Money column on Thursday – starting early and living within your means are the top keys to success.
And last but not least, Dr. Kearney Grade 8 student, Emily Mineault gave a presentation to the School District 60 Board of Trustees at their meeting last week, about her Silver Medal winning project – Can teachers differentiate AI writing from student writing – and discussed the importance for students to have access to science fairs.
Coming up this week, Fort St. John holds its Regular Council and Committee of the Whole meetings on Monday afternoon, as does the District of Taylor – as always, their agendas can be found on their websites (links provided above) and the meetings are open to the public.
The Peace River Regional District is having a special meeting on Wednesday, Feb 26 to discuss their 2025 Budget.
Wednesday is also Pink Shirt Day.
Finally, the results of the Area B By-election will be officially announced early this week, according to the PRRD website. However, preliminary results have Reid Graham winning the by-election with 204 votes to Madeleine Lehmann’s 102 votes.
