Spring really arrived in the North Peace this week, but don’t put your plants in the garden yet! As yesterday’s snow demonstrated, Mother Nature doesn’t care about the calendar.

In the news, ATCO provided a statement to The Broken Typewriter about the disposal of the Site C work camp. The PRRD is disturbed by the request to put the 1,700-bed, 665,000+ square foot facility into local landfills. Judging by comments on social media, North Peace residents are not happy about the possibility either.

The District of Taylor is purchasing a new lawn mower for the Lone Wolf Golf Course, while saving money by trading in the old one; and is continuing to work on the land acknowledgement despite lack of feedback from local First Nations whom the land acknowledgement is meant to recognize.

Brad Brain’s Smart Money column this week encourages investors not to fear bear markets, pointing out the opportunities that can be found there.

The future operations of the North Peace Fall Fair were secured this week when the Regional District voted to make North Peace Regional Park – aka the Fall Fair grounds – into a community park which would be run by the society and paid for by Area B.

In the Sidebar – The RCMP were in town recruiting this week; Fort St. John & District Chamber of Commerce’s Creating Energy Conference is almost upon us; and the SAFER program to assist seniors with increasing costs of rent received a boost from the provincial government.

Coming up this week:

This coming week is a doozy.

Not only does Fort St. John City Council meet on Monday April 14 at 3 p.m., with its Committee of the Whole meeting scheduled for 2:30 p.m., but the School District 60 Board of Trustees also meets on April 14 at 5:30 p.m., and the Peace River Regional District holds its Electoral Area Directors Committee meeting on Thursday, April 17 at 10 a.m. Click on the links to view their agendas.

On top of local government, the Federal Election is coming to Fort St. John in the form of the All-Candidates Forum, scheduled for Tuesday, Aprl 15 at 7 p.m. at The Lido. Doors open at 6 p.m. No pre-registration is necessary, but the Fort St. John & District Chamber of Commerce is taking questions from businesses in the community for the candidates to answer during the forum.

In other news, Energeticcity/Moose Media have asked for my help during the election, so The Broken Typewriter will be covering local government meetings until April 28 for both outlets, while civic reporter Caitlin Coombes is exclusively covering the election. That means I’ll be wearing two hats for the next two weeks, so look forward to the same great coverage you get from The Broken Typewriter, but over at Energeticcity.ca as well!
